MONTH 11

Impact

Your life has touched more people than you know.

Impact is not only what we accomplish or leave behind. It is also the effect of how we live, how we treat people, what we model, what we teach, and what others carry forward because our lives crossed theirs.

Month 11 Impact

THIS MONTH'S THOUGHT

The life you live is your greatest impact.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT

We rarely get to see where our influence ends.

A stone touches the water in one place, but the movement does not stay there. It travels farther than the point where it began.

Human lives can work the same way. Something we say, teach, model, encourage, or make possible may continue moving through another person's life long after the original moment has passed.

YOU

Some ripples are visible. Others continue beyond what we ever get to know.

IMPACT IS OFTEN QUIETER THAN WE THINK

A life influences others in ordinary ways.

We tend to associate impact with something large: leadership, achievement, recognition, or changing the world. But much of our influence happens in moments that never make a résumé.

WORDS

What you say

Encouragement, advice, honesty, reassurance, and words offered at exactly the right time can stay with someone for years.

CHOICES

What you choose

Other people notice what we prioritize, what we walk away from, what we protect, and what we decide is worth our time.

PRESENCE

How you show up

Being there consistently, especially when someone needs us, can matter more than knowing exactly what to say.

EXAMPLE

How you live

The way we move through change, difficulty, joy, aging, and uncertainty teaches people something even when we never intend it to.

THE IMPACT WE CAN SEE

Some people tell us.

We may hear that our advice helped, that a kindness mattered, that someone learned from us, or that a decision we made changed something for the better.

These are the rare moments when we get to see one of our own ripples reach the shore.

THE IMPACT WE MAY NEVER SEE

Much of it keeps moving without us.

Someone repeats something we taught them. A child grows up remembering how they were treated. A colleague handles a difficult situation differently because of something they once saw us do.

Impact does not stop simply because we are no longer there to witness it.

TURN THE QUESTION AROUND

Who left ripples in my life?

One way to understand impact is to think about the people whose influence we still carry.

A teacher who believed in us. A boss who gave us a chance. A friend who stayed. A parent or grandparent whose words still surface decades later. Someone who challenged us, encouraged us, or simply made us feel seen.

Their impact is evidence that ours may also be traveling through lives in ways we cannot measure.

MY JOURNEY THIS MONTH

What have I set in motion without realizing it?

It is much easier for me to identify the people who influenced my life than to think about the ways I may have influenced someone else's.

Maybe that is because impact is difficult to measure while we are living it. We do not always know which conversation mattered, which example someone noticed, or which ordinary moment another person remembers.

This month I want to think less about whether I have done something impressive and more about whether the way I live reflects what I hope continues beyond me.

I may never know how far the smallest parts of my life have traveled.

THIS MONTH'S CHALLENGE

Tell someone their impact mattered.

Write a note to someone who impacted you.

Tell them what they did, what you remember, and what stayed with you. They may have no idea that a moment they barely remember became part of the person you are today.

100 YEARS

TAKE THE LONG VIEW

What are we leaving for people we may never meet?

Impact is not limited to the people standing in front of us. The choices one generation makes can shape the opportunities, expectations, communities, and world inherited by the next.

Thinking farther ahead changes the question from “What will I get from this?” to “What might this make possible for someone who comes after me?”

The Good Ancestor by Roman Krznaric

THE BOOK THIS MONTH

The Good Ancestor

Roman Krznaric

The Good Ancestor asks us to think beyond the present and consider how today's choices affect people in the future.

That makes it a powerful fit for Impact. It expands the idea beyond what we accomplish personally and asks a bigger question: What kind of world, values, opportunities, and example are we helping pass forward?
