MONTH 7

Fun

Not everything has to be useful.

Somewhere along the way, adulthood can turn almost everything into a responsibility, a goal, or something we should be improving. This month is about remembering what it feels like to do something simply because it is enjoyable.

Month 7 Fun
Growing older is inevitable.
Growing boring is optional.

PERMISSION GRANTED

You do not have to earn fun.

Fun often gets pushed to the end of the list. We tell ourselves we will relax after the work is done, after everyone else is taken care of, after the errands, after the obligations.

Retirement gives us a chance to question that. Enjoyment does not have to be a reward for being productive. It can simply be part of a good life.

THIS MONTH, I GIVE MYSELF PERMISSION TO

do something for absolutely no reason other than I enjoy it.

YOUR FUN MENU

What sounds good today?

Fun does not look the same for everyone. You do not need to become more adventurous, more social, or more spontaneous than you are. Start with the kind of enjoyment that actually feels like you.

Laugh

Watch something ridiculous. Call the friend who always makes you laugh. Stop taking every moment quite so seriously.

Play

Play a game. Build something. Dance. Bowl. Paint badly. Do something where being good at it is completely beside the point.

Wander

Go somewhere without turning it into an itinerary. Take the scenic route. Explore a place just because you have never been there.

Delight

Notice the small things that make an ordinary day better. Good coffee. Music. A sunny afternoon. Flowers. Dessert. A dog doing something ridiculous.

A REMINDER

Fun does not have to be...

productive impressive expensive planned good for you Instagram-worthy

Sometimes enjoying yourself is enough.

MY JOURNEY THIS MONTH

When did I get so serious?

I am realizing that I know how to make a plan. I know how to set a goal, organize a project, and make productive use of a day. I am less practiced at asking a much simpler question: What would be fun?

This month I want to pay attention to what makes me laugh, what feels light, and what I enjoy without needing it to lead anywhere. I am not trying to become a different person. I am just making more room for the part of me that knows how to play.

Maybe a good day does not always need something to show for it.

THIS MONTH'S CHALLENGE

Find something funny.

Do something that makes you laugh this week.

Watch it. Share it. Go somewhere. Call someone. Be ridiculous if necessary. The only requirement is that laughter gets a place on the calendar.

THE BOOK THIS MONTH

Joyful

Ingrid Fetell Lee

Joyful looks at the surprising ways our surroundings can influence how we feel and why certain colors, shapes, spaces, and experiences naturally create delight.

It is a perfect companion for Fun because it reminds us that joy does not always require a major event. Sometimes small changes in what surrounds us can make everyday life feel lighter, brighter, and more enjoyable.
